22nd camp season

Due date: 4.8.2018

Our 22nd camp season was attended by 204 students and 36 faculty and staff members from 4 countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia, USA and China)
The season was launched with Prah-A-harP Quartet, which was held in the Holy Trinity Church in Horní Jelení.
In session I, students improved their musical skills in symphonic ensembles, recorder ensemble, choral ensemble, piano and harp.
In addition to regular evening concerts for students, we organized an off-camp concert of all majors in Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church in Litomysl. The concert took place on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the founder of the Czech Music Camp for Youth Fr. Walter Marek. Fr. Marek luckily escaped that place while being arrested by the Communist State Police in February 1949 (one year after the Communist Party took over the rule in Czechoslovakia). Fr. Marek was forced to leave Czechoslovakia. He served as a chapel man in refugee camps in Germany before he moved to the United States in 1951 where he served as a chapel man and priest in several parishes in Michigan. He helped to start Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in 1966 and 30 years later after the Czechoslovakian Velvet Revolution he became a founder of the Czech Music Camp for Youth in the Czech Republic.
A tour of this beautiful UNESCO heritage town was also a part of this off-camp experience.
Our international campers Jiri Matousek and Jiri Svatos shared their experiences with our campers about their stay at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan and a stay in the U.S. host family.
Session II was opened with a piano recital of Vsevolod Tokmakov (Russia). Guitar Ensemble replaced harps and Czech Theatre replaced choir. Other majors remained the same.
Both orchestra and band directors praised the hard work and high level of musical skills of their students. Both ensembles rehearsed for the final concert despite the heat in the concert tent. Thanks to the Symphonic Band, the European premiere of several pieces by young American composer Jason Nitsch was played.
As the RADOST camp facility is for sale and a new owner hasn't been found yet, the Czech Music Camp for Youth will be organized at a different place in 2019, the Mountain of Holy Mother near the town Kraliky, approx. 70 km to the east of its present location. The camp dates are July 3 - 20, 2019. However, we hope to return to our original setting in the future.

21st camp season

Due date: 5.8.2017

185 students from 6 different countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, Russia, Turkey an United States) participated in our 21st season which opened with Holice Town Band concert. A  lot of former students and staff members performed. Holice Town Band was our first guest group when the camp started in 1997. pochodova_kapela.jpgThe concert schedule in session I was very busy. Besides traditional off-camp performances in the town (church and retirement home) we had an open-air concert of chorus, symphonic band an jazz band in Rehabilitation Centre in Luze and orchestra managed a successful "flash mob in the mall" in Hradec Kralove where symphony orchestra directed by Paul Kim performed selections from Phantom of the Opera and a movement from Carmen.

We also had time for camp fun at the Camp Ball with real brass band. Campers did very well at polka, waltz or tango dances.

July part of the camp season was quite rainy but fortunately the Final Day was sunny so our final concert program could finish with the Marching Band directed by Col.Ret. Thomas Palmatier.

Horni Jeleni string quartet Precordi opened session II which was a lot warmer than session I. We even had to move one band rehearsal out of the tent into the shade of woods. We had a new major which combined Theatre and Dance which was very popular especially among the day camp participants.

We are looking forward to opening our 22nd season on July 18, 2018 at Radost camp in Horni Jeleni, CZE.

20th jubilee seaon

Due date: 07/20/16 - 08/06/16

Ode to Joy performed by string and wind ensemble, choir and angklung ensemble of present and former participants ended the jubilee 20th season of the Czech Music Camp for Youth / Fine Arts Camps Europe.
Ode to Joy also finished session I but in a completely different way. Our Symphonic Band students had an opportunity to play in American style marching band.

F.A.C.E. participants at Nove Hrady castleOur jubilee season hosted 197 students from Lithuania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Turkey, USA and Czech Republic. Camp season opening concert was featuring the most successful camp alumni for example Prague Spring 2013 winner Katerina Javurkova (French horn) or the Smartest Czech TV competition winner Viktor Dekoj (French horn) and many others. Nove Hrady castle hosted our first mid-session concert of all major ensembles on July 24 followed by the tour of the castle. Other off-camp concerts were held in the Retirement Home Simeon in Horni Jeleni or Horni Jeleni Holy Trinity Church  where the opening concert of session II took place featuring a successful Prague Spring 2012 competitor Petra Zdarska (harpsichord) and Michaela Ambrosi (historical flute).

Alumni Jazz Band ensemble featuring present and former staff memb20th season finaleers of our camp
performed during the last night of our jubilee season. The season finale attracted a lot of former students and staff members. Some of them visited an exhibition of camp photographs, absorbed the atmosphere of the camp, where almost everything remained the same like in the past. Others participated in alumni jazz band or the grand finale of the season, which was probably the most touching moment because both conductors also involved those former participants who planned to come only as audience members.

We have also organized the 4th season of our exchange program with Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in the USA. This season was very successful. Blue Lake hosted 3 Czech students from our camp. Josef Simek (trombone) and Martin Horak (clarinet) participated in Blue Lake session I. Tadeas Sorejs (clarinet) became the first Czech student who participated in Blue Lake International Exchange Program touring France, Spain and U.S. midwest  with Blue Lake Southern Winds. Our conductor Col. Ret. Thomas Palmatier became the first conductor who conducted Blue Lake Faculty Band and Wind Ensembles of the Czech Music Camp in one season.
